Specializing in Child, Adolescent and Adult Psychiatry

Location

Robin Shapiro is a Board Certified General Adult Psychiatrist and Board Certifed Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist who graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.  After graduating from medical school, she completed her General Psychiatry Residency at Northwestern University in Chicago.  After graduating from her residency, Dr. Shapiro then completed a Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship at Rush University Medical Center.

Dr. Shapiro has worked in a variety of environments and treatment centers, including residential schools, substance abuse programs, school consultations, inpatient hospitals, general adult and child outpatient treatment centers, and eating disorder treatment centers.  She has experience with psychodynamically oriented psychotherapy, insight oriented therapy, supportive psychotherapy, cognitive behavior therapy, short term and long term therapy, parent training, family work, and other variations of those treatment modalities.  Dr. Shapiro has found that that effective treatment often requires a combination of approaches to properly address the patient’s needs.

Dr. Shapiro is a member of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.  She is committed to using evidence based medicine and the most up-to-date practices by continually reviewing the current literature and recommendations for treatment.

Dr. Shapiro’s general psychiatric services for adult and child patients include evaluations, medication management, psychotherapy, family sessions, consultations, and school consultations.  In addition, she treats patients dealing with eating disorders, weight management issues, mood and anxiety disorders, adjustment to life stressors and childhood disorders – including ADHD. She also provides treatment to patients with other general psychiatric needs.

Dr. Shapiro tailors her treatment to the individual needs of her patients and their families and prides herself on getting to know her patients and their needs.  During your first session she will conduct a thorough diagnostic evaluation to determine the treatment that will best suit your needs.  In some cases, an initial consultation may take more than one session.  After the initial consultation is complete, she will create an individualized treatment plan specifically tailored to your needs.

Your treatment may involve individual therapy, family therapy, or medication management.  Often, combination treatment is necessary.  Unlike many psychiatrists who only provide medication management, she also provides therapy treatment. In fact, Dr. Shapiro will provide therapy to patients who do not require medication.  For other patients, treatment includes therapy sessions in conjunction with medication management or just medication management.  Many patients benefit from the additional supportive therapy sessions in addition to the medicine she prescribes.  She would be happy to discuss with you all of the available treatment options and alternatives so that you can jointly develop the best treatment for you and/or your child.

If after the initial consultation you need services that Dr. Shapiro cannot provide, Dr. Shapiro will assist with referrals as needed to help provide you the best treatment possible.

Dr. Shapiro regularly collaborates with outside clinicians.  If you already have a therapist, please speak with Dr. Shapiro about Dr. Shapiro collaborating with your outside therapist to provide you with the most comprehensive care possible.

Dr. Shapiro understands that her patients and patients’ families may need to communicate with her outside of their scheduled sessions.  She strives to make herself available, at least by phone, within twenty-four hours of your call.  In addition, she will routinely counsel patients’ families to help them understand and cope with their loved one’s illness.

Dr. Shapiro is looking forward to your first consultation, discussing your needs and designing a treatment plan that is right for you.
